Xavier Le Pichon - The Fragility at the Heart of Humanity@ On Being

This interview reminds me of the way Richard talked about the 'weakest link' being the strongest binding force of our community/relationships in GK37. When a man or woman lives among the weakest, the most suffering people, he/she opens his/her heart to them, feels with them. It is very touching that some people choose to share the suffering of others. This means not only sharing the feeling, but also the actual suffering, i.e. they may have to live a less comfortable life in order to be with the suffering people. I just feel that this aspect of humanity is so precious and honourable.

I think it is remarkable that Dr. Le Pichon takes this as the centre part of humanity. How he sees suffering as chances for transformation resonates with the Gene Keys. People are united and pour their hearts out in the face of suffering. When we keep opening our hearts and let suffering in, it will transform us eventually. We human beings are strong not because of the yang force that we process, but the ying resilience, tenderness and compassion for others. Because fragility/suffering is at the heart and centre of human life, compassion is the essence of humanity.
